I am a microbial ecologist studying extreme soil environments in boreal and arctic ecosystems. Broadly, I am interested in how the known and unknown functions of microbes help sustain life on Earth and influence our future climate as producers and consumers of greenhouse gases. What is a Microbial Ecologist? I am someone who tries to figure out why a certain microbe is living in a particular place at a particular time. Many microbes cannot be cultivated -- however, sometimes they can be cultured if we do more detective work and figure out what they need and what they do in a specific environment. Under the direction of Professor Chris Francis, I use molecular and biogeochemical approaches to understand the abundance, distribution, and activity of nitrogen-cycling bacteria and archaea in San Francisco Bay. I’m currently a postdoc at Harvard in their Data Science Initiative.My primary position is with the Baym Lab in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School, where I study microbial ecology using a variety of quantitative approaches. Before coming here, I received my PhD in Freshwater and Marine Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I worked on I am a broadly trained plant and microbial ecologist with expertise in lichenology, mycology, plant pathology, and community ecology. My research interests are centered on host-microbe interactions, particularly those involving bacteria and fungi, and seek to elucidate the roles of such microbes in driving community-wide patterns, influencing host fitness, and/or impacting ecosystem services.
